Do you ever think of participating in a design competition, be it local or international? Have you ever participated in any competitions? I know of some architects who have participated in design competitions but they are very few or probably i have not come across many architects who have participated in one. How many design competitions do we have in Nigeria? I know we have a lot of international competitions, what about locally? How often are they done? Continue reading

Every Architect strives to produce an original design. How original can a design really be? I hear people say a design isn’t original and i always wonder what in this world is really original. Before i proceed, what is originality? Originality can be defined as the ability to think independently and creatively. Continue reading

So this is a bit different from my usual motivational Mondays post. This is for aspiring Architects, those who intend to study Architecture and not sure what to expect. Someone actually inspired this post, his name is Bolaji. A very young boy who works with one of our brick layers on site. He comes very often on site and works hard, and if i see something not done rightly, its always him i call. He told me once that he wants to be an Architect like me, and just recently he sent me a message that he’s passed JAMB and he is going to study Architecture, but not sure what to expect since he really cant draw and doesn’t know much of maths. This is not the first time i am hearing this. Everybody expects that as an architect you should be able to draw well. We are Architects not Artist. I quite agree that knowing how to draw is a plus but not a necessity. Continue reading

This is the general believe of most people – “Hiring an Architect is too expensive and i can’t afford one”. This myth is the most misunderstood myth of all time. Before you begin to believe this myth, please note that design is the one task on every project that stands to carry the most value for the entire project. The design can make or break the realization of the project. It could be really true that hiring an Architect is quite expensive and you are ready to build this dream home of yours, just before you think of hiring a builder or a contractor to design and build your dream home Continue reading

I am starting a new series which i am calling Trending designs. We all know that everyday, there are new design features/ideas that can inspire our designs. It is good to be in the know of what is trending. I would share a design trend once a week (possibly on Thursdays – “Trending Thursdays”). I am hoping it would be interactive, you like or don’t like, would you use or not, is it lovely or not.

The first design trend i would be sharing with you today is the Continue reading

My family has this urgent need to move out from where we live presently and i took it upon myself to scout for a new house (of cos as the Architect in the house, who would have done this better). I really thought this was going to be an interesting or easy task but its been quite very frustrating, annoying and difficult. So i recently sat down to analyse all the houses i have been to and considering, and i realize that non of them are good enough. I am not looking for perfect, just something good enough. One i actually did love, a simple 4 bedroom apartment, nice facade, lovely landscape, nice light fittings (lovely chandeliers and wall scones), had a beautiful pendant light in the balcony, lovely POP ceiling designs, but you wont believe this little 4 bedroom apartment Continue reading
